Energy is everywhere. It surrounds us as electromagnetic radiation, an invisible rainbow outside the realm of human vision. Energy's apparent immateriality is contrasted by the profound physical and material transformations it exerts on every known scale. Operating under the premise that design agency is constrained by the instruments and abstract models through which architects exercise control, as well as predict, verify, and reconstruct subjectivities, Beyond the Invisible Rainbow charts a projective history of architecture’s representation of energy as exemplified by the writing, curation, and artistic practice of György Kepes.

Filip Tejchman is assistant professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he began as the Innovation in Design Fellow in 2012–13. He is the founder of Untitled Office, a design and research collaborative whose work explores the intersection of building, culture, and thermodynamics. His writing has appeared in Volume, the Journal of Architectural Education, ARPA Journal, MUSEO, and the Praxis Journal of Writing + Building. He received his BArch from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, and his master’s degree in advanced architectural design from Columbia University. Tejchman has previously practiced at the offices of Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Joel Sanders Architects.
