Anders Ruhwald: Unit 1: 3583 Dubois Street is a publication that documents the three-year-long process of making a permanent installation inside a Detroit apartment. Anders Ruhwald converted the rooms in Unit 1 into abstracted spaces, using materials from the building, along with his ceramic works. Fire, a key element throughout, serves as material, process, and subject matter, becoming the vehicle for Ruhwald's exploration of destruction and renewal. Using charred wood, coal, glass, metals, and ceramics, Ruhwald meticulously composes an immersive, sensorial experience that is at once dramatic, nostalgic, and uncanny. The installation is both a memorial and a proposal in which materials and forms coalesce to retell the past, animate the present, and suggest a shifted future. The catalogue documents the installation, the process behind it, and two major exhibitions, at Volume Gallery (2015) and MoCA Cleveland (2016–17), mounted to research and explore its final form.

Anders Herwald Ruhwald graduated from London's Royal College of Art and is currently the Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Ceramics Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Ruhwald has had more than twenty solo and eighty group exhibitions, and has taught at several institutions in Europe and North America, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was associate professor.
