In light of the current political crisis around climate change, what can architecture possibly contribute towards a new planetary imaginary of our contemporary environment beyond environmentalism and technological determinism? Architecture as Measure is an elaboration on this question, and on the disciplinary and cultural potentials of such a provocation. It positions climate change as a cultural and political idea that requires a renewed architectural environmental imagination. The book takes on this task by presenting a set of unconventional collisions between architecture and climate change, which all extrapolate broader concerns of the city, environment, and geography through the lens of specific architectural questions such as form, representation, and materiality. In addition to the introductory essay, the book consists of nine separate chapters, each of which contains an essay by Neyran Turan and is coupled with a project by her architectural practice NEMESTUDIO. Inherent in the premise of the book is the proposition of a new conception of architecture's engagement with the wider world through a specific focus on architecture's capacity to boost its planetary effect from within.

Neyran Turan is an architect and a founding partner at NEMESTUDIO. She is currently an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. NEMESTUDIO has been recognized with several awards, most recently the 2016 Architectural League New York Prize for Young Architects, multiple citations at the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 The Architects' Newspaper Best of Design Awards, a Notable Award at the Core 77 Design Awards 2017, an ACSA Faculty Design Award, and multiple Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts awards. NEMESTUDIO's work, ranging from installations to buildings and landscapes, has been widely published and exhibited internationally at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, Storefront Art and Architecture Gallery in New York, Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Aedes Architecture Forum Gallery in Berlin, Betts Project in London, Banvard Gallery in Columbus, Istanbul Design Biennial, and among other venues. Turan's work focuses on alternative forms of environmental imagination and their capacity for new aesthetic and political trajectories within architecture and urbanism. She is the founding chief-editor of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design journal New Geographies and was the editor-in-chief of the first two volumes of the journal New Geographies 0 and New Geographies: After Zero. Turan is the curator of the Pavilion of Turkey in the 2021 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition.
